Zechariah 2-3

Introduction

In Zechariah 2–3, God continues speaking hope to His struggling people. They have been back in Jerusalem for twenty years, yet the work is hard and opposition is real. Through two powerful visions, the Lord reminds them they can count on Him—not only for comfort and justice, but for His protecting presence and complete forgiveness. In the last chapter, we saw we can count on God mercy and justice. These visions deepen that truth: God is coming to live among His people, and He removes every accusation against them.

1) You Can Count on His Protecting Presence (Zechariah 2:1-13) – Third Vision

Zechariah sees a man with a measuring line, preparing to measure Jerusalem for new walls. An angel declares that the city will become so large and full of people that it will not need physical walls. Instead, the Lord Himself will be a wall of fire around it and the glory within it.

God calls His scattered people to return quickly to the place where His presence dwells. He promises to defend them personally—“whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye” (Zechariah 2:8). Many nations will join themselves to the Lord, and He will live among them. The only right response is to “be still” in awe before Him (Zechariah 2:13).

Do you feel safe? If not, it may be because the presence of God is not felt in your life. The Lord wants to be your protection and your glory.

2) You Can Count on His Complete Forgiveness (Zechariah 3:1-10) – Fourth Vision

Zechariah sees the high priest Joshua standing before the angel of the Lord (a picture of Jesus), with Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. Joshua is dressed in filthy clothes, representing the guilt of the people. Satan wants to accuse, blind, and keep God’s people in guilt.

But Jesus rebukes Satan and removes Joshua’s filthy garments. He clothes him in clean, rich robes and gives him a clean turban. Joshua is forgiven and restored to service. This is a beautiful picture of the gospel: Satan accuses us, but Jesus defends us, removes our guilt, and clothes us in His own righteousness.

Application

Zechariah 2–3 shows us two things we can always count on: God’s protecting presence and His complete forgiveness.

The same Jesus who promised to be a wall of fire around Jerusalem is with us today. The same Jesus who rebuked Satan and clothed Joshua stands as our Advocate, removing every accusation against us.

Where do you need to return to the Lord right now? Where do you need to stop listening to the accuser and receive the clean robes Christ offers?

Because Jesus has opened the way, draw near to God with confidence. Be still in awe before Him. Let His presence be your safety and His forgiveness be your freedom.

Small Group Questions

· How do you feel when you think about getting really close to God—does it seem exciting, scary, or something else?

· Do you have anything that God has given to you that He wants you to give to others? (Time, passion, kindness, money)

· Which of the special items in the tabernacle means the most to you right now? Explain why.

· Would you say that you are taking advantage of the closeness you can have with God through Jesus?

For Further Study

  • Read Zechariah 2–3 alongside Ephesians 2:13-22 to see how Christ is our peace and the cornerstone of God’s dwelling place.

  • Study Romans 8:33-34 and Zechariah 3:1-5 to rejoice that no one can bring a charge against God’s elect.

  • Meditate on Hebrews 4:14-16 to remember we have a great High Priest who has opened the way into God’s presence.
