Wisdom for Women
This commentary expands on teaching through Proverbs 31:10-31, a portrait of the wise woman of noble character who builds a thriving home and legacy. Everyone is called to live as the man or woman God created—complementarian roles where biology and Scripture affirm distinct yet equal contributions for His glory (Genesis 1:27; 2:18; Galatians 3:28). So, what does a wise woman do? This acrostic poem (each verse starting with successive Hebrew letters) celebrates virtues like godly character, trustworthiness, diligence, and nurturing—qualities that honor the Lord and bless others. The passage calls women to cultivate inner strength and modesty, reflecting Christ's servant love in family and community.
Proverbs 31:10: A Wise Woman Cultivates Godly Character
“A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies" (Proverbs 31:10). Noble character—strength of virtue—surpasses material value (Proverbs 12:4; 1 Peter 3:3-4).
"She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy" (Proverbs 31:20; see also Proverbs 14:21). Godly character shows in compassion—serving the vulnerable (Isaiah 58:7; James 1:27). This inner beauty endures, far beyond fleeting charm (Proverbs 31:30; 1 Timothy 2:9-10).
Proverbs 31:11: A Wise Woman Is Worthy of Trust
“Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value" (Proverbs 31:11). Trustworthiness builds security—handling affairs reliably (Proverbs 31:27; Titus 2:4-5). "She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness" (Proverbs 31:26-27; see also Proverbs 10:31). Wise speech and diligence earn trust—guiding with truth, managing diligently (Ephesians 4:29; Colossians 3:23).
Proverbs 31:13: A Wise Woman Works Diligently for Her Family
“She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands" (Proverbs 31:13; see also Proverbs 31:17-19, 21-22, 24). Diligence provides and prepares—laboring eagerly for loved ones (Proverbs 6:6-8; 2 Thessalonians 3:10).
“She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants" (Proverbs 31:15). Early rising symbolizes proactive care—meeting needs faithfully (Psalm 127:2; Titus 2:5).
Proverbs 31:25: A Wise Woman Is Clothed in Strength and Modesty
"She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come" (Proverbs 31:25). Inner strength brings confidence—facing future without fear (Isaiah 41:10; Philippians 4:13).
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised" (Proverbs 31:30; see also Proverbs 31:28-29). Modesty focuses on fearing the Lord over outward allure—praised for reverence (1 Peter 3:3-4; 1 Timothy 2:9-10).
Application
Wise women are not consumed with outward appearance but with pleasing the Lord—possessing a nurturing strength men lack, caring for home and hearts (Titus 2:3-5; 1 Timothy 5:10). This noble character blesses husbands, children, and communities—praised for fearing God (Proverbs 31:31; Psalm 112:1-2). Whether single or married, cultivate these virtues to reflect Christ's love. Examine your life: Does it prioritize inner godliness? Surrender to Him, letting His grace shape you into a woman of strength and dignity.
