Leaving Lust
This commentary expands on my teaching through Proverbs 23:26-28, a father's plea to his son for wisdom in guarding against lust's deceptive traps. Lust has some of the worst consequences, exchanging long-term success for short-term pleasure—like Esau trading his birthright for a meal (Genesis 25:29-34). It's especially challenging for young people, intertwined with biological drives, but difficult for all ages without discipline. These verses urge giving the heart to wisdom, avoiding the “deep pit" of immorality that ensnares. The passage calls for vigilance, recognizing lust as a perversion of God's good gifts meant for enjoyment within His design.
Proverbs 23:26: Lust Targets Young People
“My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways" (Proverbs 23:26). The father calls for undivided attention—lust preys on the inexperienced, promising quick thrills (Proverbs 7:7-23; 1 Corinthians 6:18).It is an intense feeling but fades fast when resisted—like impulse buys that lose appeal (James 1:14-15; 4:7). Because consequences emerge later, experience is key—youth need guidance (Proverbs 1:4; Titus 2:6-8). Lust intertwines with biology, but God's grace empowers resistance (1 Corinthians 10:13; Galatians 5:16). Delight in wisdom's ways for lasting joy (Psalm 16:11; Proverbs 3:17-18).
Proverbs 23:27: Lust Takes from You When You Can’t See It
“For an adulterous woman is a deep pit, and a wayward wife is a narrow well" (Proverbs 23:27). Lust digs hidden pits—initial allure masks entrapment (Proverbs 5:3-6; 7:22-23).
It is dangerous because giving in feels good momentarily, but damages the heart beneath—a thin line between pleasure and regret (Hebrews 11:25; Romans 6:23). Lust steals purity, trust, and future peace (Proverbs 6:32-33; Ephesians 5:3-5). Recognize the snare; flee to God's protection (2 Timothy 2:22; Psalm 119:9-11).
Proverbs 23:28: Lust Tanks You in the Long Run
“Like a bandit she lies in wait, and multiplies the unfaithful among men" (Proverbs 23:28). Lust ambushes, leading to multiplied unfaithfulness and destruction (Proverbs 2:16-19; Hosea 4:11).
Giving in forms patterns toward ruin—wrecking lives and families through broken covenants (Malachi 2:14-16; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10). Resist to avoid long-term fallout; God's way brings freedom (John 8:34-36; Romans 6:12-14).
Application
Lust is sin because it perverts God's good creations—meant for enjoyment in marriage and moderation (Genesis 2:24; 1 Corinthians 7:2-5). Food and pleasures are gifts, but excess corrupts (Philippians 3:19; 1 Timothy 4:4). Jesus redeems—He faced temptation yet remained pure, offering victory over lust (Hebrews 4:15; 1 Corinthians 10:13). Surrender your heart to Him; let wisdom guide your eyes (Matthew 5:28-30; Colossians 3:5). Examine desires: Do they honor God or seek fleeting pleasure? Repent, find contentment in Christ, and experience true fulfillment.
